I was inspired to create an altered book visual journal from the others I had seen by clever and creative types. My usual  art journals have been 6 in x 6 in Canson spiral bound sketchbook. I liked the manageable size, because the pages were small, but not too small. Spiral bindings are ideal because they allow the book to be taken apart. I would work on several pages at once without any worry of the pages accidentally bleeding onto each other, or getting inadvertently glued together. I tend to be a very messy art journal-er.

I have always liked the look of altered book art journals. The text and imagery automatically provides a background which alleviates my initial nervousness from stark white blank pages.  I love how the original text can be crossed out and emphasized to create new meanings.  Found imagery can also be layered with the books illustration.

I did add additional coloring and staining to the background for my starting point.  So here I am, and I am excited to see how the journal will develop.
